Article 37: The Costs of Running a Swimming Pool in Spains Hondon Valley

If you are looking to purchase a property in the Hondon Valley you may be lucky enough to get a villa with a pool, however this pool comes with some cost as it is not just about relaxing and enjoying it. There are upkeep and running costs to take into consideration.

Owning a swimming pool in the Hondon Valley is a fantastic addition to any property, providing a refreshing escape from the summer heat and enhancing the overall appeal of your home. When it is 35’c in the summer the refreshing pool is a godsend…However, as with any luxury, there are costs associated with maintaining a pool.

So in this article for our knowledge-base I explore the ongoing expenses for both saltwater and chlorine pools, focusing on the two most popular sizes: 8x4 metres and 10x5 metres.

Initial Installation Costs

If you are considering installing a pool, an 8x4 metre pool typically costs between €15,000 and €20,000, while a larger 10x5 metre pool can range from €20,000 to €30,000, depending on the design and features. Factors such as heating, lighting, and automatic covers will increase the initial investment.

Chlorine vs Saltwater Pools

We have covered this topic in our Two Minute Tuesday Video vlogs so be sure to have a look. https://hondonvalleyhomes.com/...

Chlorine pools require regular additions of chlorine tablets or liquid to maintain water quality. A typical household can expect to spend around €300-€500 per year on chlorine and other balancing chemicals.

Saltwater pools, while initially more expensive to set up due to the required saltwater chlorinator (costing around €800-€1,500), have lower ongoing chemical costs, averaging around €100-€200 annually. However, the salt cell will need replacing every 3-5 years, which can cost €300-€600.

Water and Electricity Costs

Water consumption varies depending on evaporation rates and usage, but topping up a pool can cost around €100-€200 per year. Electricity for filtration and circulation pumps typically adds €300-€600 annually to your utility bills, with larger pools requiring more energy. Heated pools will have significantly higher running costs, particularly if using an electric heat pump.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Keeping a pool clean requires regular skimming, vacuuming, and filter cleaning. Hiring a pool maintenance service costs approximately €50-€100 per month, depending on service frequency. DIY maintenance requires investing in brushes, nets, and a robotic pool cleaner, which can cost between €500-€1,500.

Additional Expenses

Repairs & Equipment Replacement: Over time, pumps, filters, and liners may need replacement, costing anywhere from €500 to €2,000.

Winterisation: If closing your pool for winter, expect to spend €100-€300 on covers and chemicals.

Si is it worth it?..... Of course it is.

When I first moved to Spain in 2006 I did not have my own pool and so I know what it is like to go through a summer without one. The chore of cleaning and maintaining it throughout the winter is more than outweighed by the enjoyment of using it throughout the late spring all summer and early autumn.

Owning a pool in the Hondon Valley is a rewarding investment that enhances your lifestyle. Whether you choose a chlorine or saltwater system, understanding the ongoing costs ensures that you can maintain your pool effectively without unexpected expenses. With proper care, your pool will remain a valuable and enjoyable feature of your home for many years to come.

The estate agent in me also always has an eye on what having a pool does for the value of your property….. It is a simple equation: Whatever you spend on a pool is added to the value of the property and it also makes the villa much simpler to sell in the future.
