Article 44: Spanish Driving Licence Points System Explained – Stay Safe and Keep Your Points!

Understanding the Spanish Driving Points System: What You Need to Know

Driving in Spain? Then it’s worth getting to grips with the points-based driving licence system. It’s not as scary as it sounds — think of it as a reward-and-penalty game where good driving keeps you winning.

Here’s how it works:

How many points do you start with?

  • New drivers start with 8 points.
  • After 3 years of clean driving, you’re bumped up to 12 points.
  • Drive like a saint for another 3 years, and you can get up to 15 points — the maximum.

How do you lose points?

Break the rules, lose the points. Simple.

  • Using a mobile phone while driving? -3 to -6 points
  • Not wearing a seatbelt? -3 points
  • Drink-driving? -4 to -6 points
  • Speeding (depending on how much)? -2 to -6 points
  • Ignoring a red light? -4 points

You’ll also face fines, of course. But the real kicker is that when your points hit zero, your licence is revoked.

Can you get points back?

Yes — if you behave!

  • 2 years of offence-free driving = full recovery (unless you lost them for a very serious offence, then it’s 3 years).
  • You can also take a driver awareness course every 2 years to recover up to 6 points.

What happens if you lose all your points?

  • Your driving licence is invalid.
  • You’ll be banned from driving for 6 months (or 3 months if you're a professional driver).
  • After that, you’ll need to take a course, pass a theory test, and reapply for your licence.

Good behaviour pays off

  • Drive well and you’ll be rewarded with bonus points.
  • No need to stress over the odd parking ticket — they don’t cost you points, just euros!

How to check your points?

  • You can check your current points at the DGT website (Dirección General de Tráfico) — it’s quick and easy.

Final thoughts

Driving in Spain is a pleasure — winding country roads, coastal views, and plenty of sunshine. But the key is to drive safely and smartly. The points system is designed to make the roads safer for everyone, so if you stick to the rules, you’ll keep your licence squeaky clean.
