Surroundings
On the border between the provinces of Alicante and Murcia the small traditional town of Pinoso is located in mountainous countryside about 450m above sea level. Pinoso has a population of just over 8,000 (2008) and a municipal area of around 126km2, formerly a purely agricultural town it is now attracting the attention of foreign buyers as an ideal location for a holiday home away from the hustle and bustle of the busy coastline resorts, which can still be reached in about 40 minutes. Pinoso is renown for being one of the wealthiest towns in Spain on the back of the wine, marble and salt industry and this is reflected in the abundance of facilities for such a small town and the braod tree lined avenues contrasting with the narrow traditional streets in the old town.
The area around Pinoso is still mostly for agricultural use and grape vines are the most widely grown crop, the Monastrell variety being one of the most popular and this produces some excellent quality red wines for which the area is renowned. Pinoso is also important for the production of marble and rock salt.
Pinoso has a twice weekly market and this is a good place to stock up on fresh produce. There are several supermarkets and an abundance of small shops as well as doctors, dentists, bakers, bodegas, butchers, police station, cinema, theatre, sports center and schooling.
