Article #53. Updated 2026 Non Lucrative Visa Requirements

Non-Lucrative Visa – Main Requirements (UK & Non EU Applicants)

1. Financial Means (the main requirement)

You must prove you can live in Spain without working:

  • Approx. €28,800 per year (single applicant)
    • approx. €7,200 per year per dependent

This is based on 400% of IPREM (Spain’s income index)

Accepted income sources:

  • Pensions
  • Rental income
  • Dividends / investments
  • Savings (if clearly evidenced)

Key point: it is not just having the money—the documentation and presentation are critical.

2. No Work Allowed

  • You cannot work in Spain (or for Spanish clients)
  • This is a residency visa based on passive income only

3. Private Health Insurance

  • Must be:
    • From a provider authorised in Spain
    • Full coverage (no co-payments)
    • Valid for at least 1 year

4. Clean Criminal Record

  • UK ACRO certificate required
  • Covers the last 5 years
  • Must be:
    • Apostilled
    • Officially translated into Spanish

5. Medical Certificate

  • Must confirm you do not have diseases affecting public health
  • Issued by a doctor
  • Also translated/apostilled if required

6. Valid Passport

  • Minimum 1 year validity
  • At least 2 blank pages

7. Proof of Accommodation

  • Property purchase or rental agreement
  • Temporary accommodation can sometimes be accepted initially

8. Application Through UK Consulate

  • Must apply via the Spanish consulate covering your area
  • Usually handled via BLS International centres

9. Commitment to Live in Spain

  • To renew the visa, you must spend:
    • 183+ days per year in Spain

Simple Explanation

To qualify, you need to show:

  • You have enough money to live without working
  • You are medically insured and low risk
  • You intend to actually live in Spain

Where Most UK Applicants Go Wrong

  • Poorly presented financial documents
  • Incorrect type of health insurance
  • Missing translations or apostilles
  • Assuming savings alone are enough without clear structure
