Article 38: Driving in Spain - Understanding Spain’s Driving Points System: What You Need to Know

If you are planning to drive in Spain or have recently moved to the Hondon Valley, understanding the country’s points-based driving licence system is essential. Whether you are a seasoned driver or new to the roads here, keeping your licence in good standing can save you time, money, and stress. So, how does the system work, and what should you be aware of? Let’s break it down!

How Does the Spanish Points System Work?

Unlike some other countries, Spain operates on a system where drivers start with a set number of points and can lose them for various infractions. Here’s how it works:

  • New drivers (less than 3 years of experience) start with 8 points.
  • Drivers with more than 3 years of experience start with 12 points.
  • If you drive safely and avoid infractions, you are rewarded! After 3 years without violations, you receive 3 extra points.
  • You can continue to earn 1 additional point every 3 years, up to a maximum of 15 points.

This system encourages responsible driving while providing an opportunity for drivers to improve their standing over time.

How Can You Lose Points?

Points are deducted depending on the severity of the offence. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • 6-point offences: Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or refusing to take a test; reckless driving; exceeding the speed limit by more than 50%.
  • 4-point offences: Putting others at risk, throwing objects onto the road, speeding by over 40km/h, illegal parking, exceeding the passenger limit by 50%.
  • 3-point offences: Not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone while driving, failing to keep a safe driving distance.

What Happens If You Lose All Your Points?

Losing all your points means your licence is no longer valid. However, you can regain it by completing a 24-hour traffic re-education course, after which you will be awarded 8 points. If you lose only part of your points, you can take a 12-hour course to recover them.

Can You Get Help with Re-Education Costs?

Yes! Some insurance policies offer coverage for traffic fine handling services. This can include up to €500 towards the cost of a re-education course and associated fees for regaining your licence. However, there are some limitations:

  • This assistance is available only once per policy period.
  • Points lost must be connected to the insured vehicle.
  • Claims must be made within 3 months of the points being deducted.

Drive Safe and Stay Informed!

The Spanish driving points system is designed to reward careful drivers and encourage better road habits. Staying within the rules not only helps you avoid fines and penalties but also makes the roads safer for everyone.
